MACDOWELL DOWNTOWN: Mugabi Byenkya presents ‘Lagos to Peterborough’

This Friday, Nov. 1, Mugabi Byenkya will present a multimedia program sharing stories from a global creative journey.

Through slides, spoken word and song, Byenkya will recount experiences from a childhood in Nigeria to their first MacDowell Fellowship in New Hampshire. Free and open to the public, this one-hour program will take place at the Monadnock Center for History and Culture, 19 Grove St., Peterborough, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Born in Lagos to Ugandan parents and now residing in Kampala, Uganda, Byenkya is an author, rapper, singer and performer who has appeared at more than 100 festivals, slams and conferences in North America and East Africa. Byenkya’s memoir, “Dear Philomena,” became a bestseller in Uganda and inspired a 45-city tour. Recent works include the mixtape “Songs For Wo(Men) 2” and a debut chapbook, “Songs For Wo(Men).”

While in Peterborough, Byenkya will be developing a musical theater project focused on identity, grief and belonging. Doors open at 7 p.m. with light refreshments.
