Peterborough’s Boy Scout Troop 8 will be picking up live Christmas trees for disposal again this year.
The event is a fundraiser for the troop.
“We are not sure if there will be a bonfire this year, so the trees will either be taken to local farms for the goats to enjoy or to the Peterborough Recycling Center to be chipped/composted,” said organizer Sue Darroch Whitaker.
Troop 8 is offering two pickup dates -- Jan. 4 and 11. To request a tree pickup, or to make a donation, find Peterborough Troop 8 on Facebook at facebook.com/groups/1424248834557824. To donate through PayPal, go to paypal.com/donate/?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=WQMGN3NCTB3KY&source=url.

According to Whitaker, pickup is limited to towns surrounding Peterborough due to the limited number of volunteers. People requesting tree pickup should place undecorated trees at the end of their driveway by 9 a.m. on pickup day. Participants are asked to include a reclosable bag including a donation, or a note indicating that they have donated electronically.
Whitaker said that while tree pickup is a Troop 8’s main fundraiser for the year, it is also a community service ensuring proper disposal of trees, and a donation is not mandatory. The troop is also looking for farms who would like discarded trees for their livestock.
