The Mariposa Museum on Main Street in Peterborough, in what was formerly the home of the New England Marionette Opera, returned a piece of the opera's repertoire to its exhibit space Saturday.

“Madame Butterfly” is again on display in the museum following months of cleaning, restringing and rebalancing of the 22-inch high marionette in her plexiglass case.

The opera “Madame Butterfly” was one of the main productions from NEMO and was the centerpiece of its three-week run at the Boston Summer Opera Festival in 1999. The marionette was crafted by theater personnel, and the costume was done by Masako Hayashi, wife of former Peterborough restaurateur Hiroshi Hayashi. Masako had done all of the costumes for the New York City Opera production of “Madame Butterfly,” and the same for the Boston Opera Company.

Linda Marsella, the founder of the Mariposa Museum, was focused on her desire to recognize the former tenant of the building, and, having Madame Butterfly on display fulfilled that desire. Shortly after the museum opened in 2002, the marionette was back in its operatic home in the Mariposa, Spanish for “butterfly.”
