The occupants of a two-family home on Main Street in Jaffrey have been displaced after a three-alarm fire Wednesday destroyed the attached barn and breezeway, and damaged the home and apartment, according to the Jaffrey Fire Department.
Fire crews responded to a report of a fire on Main Street at about 3:45 p.m. Fire Chief David Chamberlain said that people who were working on the Monadnock Inn next door first noticed smoke, contacted emergency services and alerted the homeowner and first-floor resident to the situation.
Chamberlain said the fire was increased to a third alarm, due to the need for additional resources.
The home is split into two units, one occupied by the homeowner on the first floor, and an apartment on the second floor, according to Chamberlain. The homeowner was the only person who was home at the time of the fire.
The fire appears to have started in the attached barn, which is a complete loss, Chamberlain said. It spread to the breezeway and damaged bedrooms in the breezeway. The main part of the home sustained water and smoke damage, but fire crews were able to keep the flames from spreading past the breezeway.
The barn did not have any animals in it, Chamberlain said. Fire crews rescued a dog from the second story and provided it with oxygen therapy at the scene. Two cats in the home were also unharmed. The homeowner was able to exit the home before crews arrived.
“The barn is completely gone,” Chamberlain said. “It’s still standing, but there is severe damage, and more than likely it will have to come down.”
Chamberlain said that the two units are currently not able to be occupied.
