The Greenfield fire and police departments brought their best game to the Guns ’n’ Hoses rematch July 4 at Oak Park, with the police pulling out a 7-6 victory.
The 2023 Guns ’n’ Hoses game, played on Aug. 19, was a disheartening loss for the Fire Department. Firefighter Mike Borden, who announced Thursday’s game, got a few laughs when he said the score of the game was 8-2 for the police.
“No one believes that!” someone yelled from the crowd.
The town decided to move the game to July 4 to help bring the crowds to Oak Park during Greenfield’s July 4 celebration, which was organized jointly by the Town of Greenfield, the Greenfield Recreation Department, the Oak Park Committee, the Greenfield Historical Society, Stephenson Library and the Friends of the Greenfield Community Meetinghouse.
A groups of Greenfield residents who call themselves the “Ungrateful Colonists” – Dave Thimmel, Marcus Dube, Joe Longg and Jarvis Adams Jr. – gathered donations and organized and sponsored a fireworks show in the field next to the Greenfield Inn as the finale of the July 4 celebrations.
“It was a great idea to have the game today while all the other stuff was going on at Oak Park, and to see the whole community come and support these departments,” said Thimmel. “It was great to have the kids’ activities at the same time.”
Greenfield Fire Association volunteers ran a dunk tank in the children’s area as a Fire Department fundraiser, and the Oak Park Committee sold hamburgers, hot dogs, snacks and beverages.
Playing for the Greenfield Fire Department were firefighters and volunteers Andrej Kokal, who coached the team; Erik Kokal; Kris Kokal; Mike Borden, who announced the game; Melissa Ross; Laura Kostenblatt; Jake McTauge; Curtis Hamilton; Chaz Babb; Tom Cove; Jeremy Gagnon; Sam Tarplin; Aiden Leonard; Nate Iverson; Rob Wachenfeld; and Scott Martin.

Playing for the Greenfield Police Department were Chief Brian Giammarino, Sgt. Frank Shea, Mike Eneguess, Chris Martin of the Rindge PD, Ethan Christiansen of Antrim PD, Tom Houghton of New Hampshire Fish and Game, Aaron Costello of Francestown PD, John Langley from the Strafford Country Sheriff’s Department and retired State Trooper Scott Tracy.
A.J. Setaro was base coach, Bob Marshall the umpire and Mike Marschok the field base coach.
The game started with Kostenblatt batting against Tracy. By the top of the fourth, the police were ahead 4-1. After a base hit, Tracy came close to knocking down the first baseman, but crisis was averted. Langley increased the police’s lead with a home run.
The action ramped up in the sixth inning, when the firefighters rallied to make the score 7-6.
In the end, however, the police ended up the winners for the second year running.
“We just love doing this,” said Shea. “It was awesome.”
