The Harris Center for Conservation Education will host a native plant sale on their grounds on Wednesday, Sept. 6, from noon to 4 p.m., featuring plants grown by Fassett Farm Nursery in Jaffrey.

“It’s exciting to have a native-plant grower in the region,” stated Francie Von Mertens, who helped create the Harris Center’s pollinator garden. “No more need to travel long distances to source plants. By hosting the sale, we’re eager to spread the word and support owner Aaron Abitz.”

The Harris Center established its pollinator garden eight years ago in response to a decline in pollinating insects, as plants and pollinators can’t thrive without each other. In addition to supporting pollinators and other native wildlife by providing food and shelter, native plants are adapted to the region’s soils and climate. They require less fertilizer and water, and are more resilient to climate extremes.

Aaron Abitz and the Harris Center pollinator garden team will be available at the sale to talk about the wisdom and satisfaction of landscaping with native plants, goldenrod included.
