In January, after several visits to the hospital, Hunter and Shawna Mills received the news that their eight-month-old daughter Sylvie was diagnosed with a five-centimeter pilocytic astrocytoma, a rare brain tumor that is non-cancerous.

After receiving the news, Hunter said community members immediately rallied together in support for Sylvie.

“It’s been challenging, but I did not beg,” said Hunter, a firefighter and DPW employee. “People just came together and said. ‘Let’s give it a go.’”

On Saturday, Feb. 18, friends, family and first-responders from Lyndeborough and other surrounding towns gathered at Center Hall to show their support for the Mills family. In an effort to raise money for Sylvie’s treatment, the hall hosted a spaghetti dinner where community members could buy a plate and make a donation. Local businesses and close friends of the Mills family also donated gift baskets that were raffled off to community members. Nearly 1,500 community members attended.

Surprised by the large turnout, Hunter said him and his family are beyond grateful for the support.

“It’s very overwhelming,” said Hunter. “It’s incredible the amount of support we received from this community. I’m blessed.”

Shawna Mills said she’s also grateful to live in a tight-knit community like Lyndeborough.

“It’s just really nice to see people come together. We are all just here for each other,” she said.

From various fundraising efforts, the Mills family has raised mroe than $15,000 for Sylvie’s treatment, and that number is expected to keep climbing. Hunter said he advises families dealing with similar challenges to look toward their community for additional support.

“Don’t be afraid to reach out for help,” said Hunter.

According to Hunter, Sylvie is expected to undergo IV chemotherapy treatment once a week for the next three months.
