The Mascenic Regional High School and Boynton Middle School cheer squads came together in July to participate in the the National Cheerleaders Association camp, coming away with both individual and team accolades, including three members being named as All-Americans.
The camp, held at the Husson University in Bangor, Maine, ran from July 19 to 23, and included four days of classes, including jumps chants, stunts and dancing.
The two teams, which went to camp as the combined Mascenic squad, received multiple accolades throughout their four days at camp, including receiving the "Spirit Stick,” given to teams who show good attitude and sportsmanship, all four days of the camp. They also won for “Team Chant,” two superior blue ribbons, an award for technical excellence in motions and an award for technical excellence in jumps.
“The top team chant was a big win – we’ve never done that so it was the first time we ever attempted it and they killed it,” said coach Heather Schoff.
Individually, Lyla Stauffeneker and Molly Seeley were recognized as “Pin it Forward” recipients, given to athletes by staffers recognizing them for a quality that made them stand out. Ten of the athletes were recognized as All-American nominees, and three were named All-Americans: Gabriella Muhonen, Ella Keating and Molly Seeley.
Additionally, Keating has been invited to apply for a staff position with the NCA, the first time a Mascenic cheerleader has received this invitation.
“Having 10 All-American nominees and three girls named is amazing,” Schoff said. “Ella receiving her application to apply to be staff is also a huge deal. They do a special presentation for high school seniors that receive an application; this is the first time for us!”
The teams attended the camp jointly, with a total of 19 athletes: Muhonen, Keating, Seeley, Ellie Hinkel, Ashlynn Blood, Chloe Haavisto, Lea Macinnis, Emma Macinnis, Kyra Veilleux, Elsie Desrosiers, Kiahna Farrey, Stauffeneker, Valerie Stenerson, Elliana Nichols, Laci Wescott, Myah Jenkins, Avery Viglione, Olivia Kutyla and Olivia Klebes. They were joined by coaches Sandy Seppala, Kristen Stauffeneker and Heather Schoff.
