The cover of the newly merged Monadnock Ledger-Transcript’s first issue on Sept. 28, 2006, brought news from Greenfield, Jaffrey, Dublin, Peterborough, Mason and Sharon.

In Greenfield, 93-year-old Anna Chute was awarded the Boston Post Cane as the town’s oldest resident. “I was born in Greenfield and I’ve lived here my entire life,” said Chute. “I wouldn’t live anywhere else.

Meanwhile, Jaffrey’s Conservation Commission urged the town to buy 66 acres on Cheshire Pond, while Peterborough selectmen agreed to buy the New England Business Service property. A New Ipswich firefighter appeared to be hopelessly tangled, but it was just training at the former Beech Hill Hospital in Dublin.

A Mason couple found their goat in the clutches of a bear – who dropped it after the husband screamed – and Kristopher Calnan of Peterborough said he was fired from Sharon Arts Center for protecting a student’s right to free expression.
