Rindge Conservation Commission schedules hike

The Rindge Conservation Commission will host a hike through a snowy landscape under the light of the Full Snow Moon on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 6:30 p.m. at Tetreault Park. The hike will begin at the log cabin behind the parking area on Rand Road, about half a mile west of U.S. 202.

February is typically the coldest and snowiest month in New England, and Native Americans called the month’s full moon the Full Snow Moon. It marked a time of poor hunting and dwindling food supplies. Alternate names for this full moon include the Bone Moon, Bear Moon and Hunger Moon. The commission encourages bringing a food item to donate to the Rindge Food Pantry.

The one-hour hHike is free and will be led by an experienced Conservation Commission member. Hikers will traverse well-defined trails. Participants should prepare for cold nighttime temperatures with warm hiking boots, gloves or mittens, a hat and layers of clothing. Snow is expected on the ground, so consider using snowshoes or cross-country skis. Cleats or boots with good traction are recommended if conditions are icy.

In case of inclement conditions, check the Town of Rindge website at rindgenh.gov/conservation-commission. If roads are unsafe, the Conservation Commission will post a cancellation notice.

The Rindge Conservation Commission monitors and protects wetlands, lakeshores, watersheds and other natural resources within the town. It hosts hikes, workdays and educational events to involve and educate the public about conservation areas and the benefits of preserving land for future generations.
