Peterborough honored its veterans during Veterans Day ceremonies at the Main Street Bridge Monday morning.
Groups ranging from local Sea Cadets to the American Heritage Girls marched to the bridge as a group of veterans in uniform stood at attention mid-span. Brooklyn Johnson, 10, of Temple, presented a bouquet to retired Navy Chief Petty Officer John Franklin at the bridge. Brooklyn Sipe of the South Middle School band played “Taps,” which was followed by a moment of silence. Franklin cast the bouquet into the Contoocook River and saluted.
The assembled groups marched to the Town House in Peterborough for a ceremony commemorating the sacrifices of all veterans. The ceremony was held at 11 a.m., the hour on Nov. 11, 1918 at which the guns fell silent, commencing an armistice ending World War I.
