Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative Middle High School students take a creative approach to their learning, thanks to the inspiration from one art teacher.

On Saturday, May 13, approximately 35 WLC students showcased their colorful array of two- and three-dimensional artwork at the Wilton Public Library. This year’s showcase featured an assortment of pastel paintings, sculptures and artwork inspired by the prompts “What do you treasure?” and “What does it mean to be patriotic?”

According to WLC art teacher Emily Hall, the purpose of the showcase was to challenge students to think outside the box, and to not be afraid to express their true feelings about the current state of the country.

“At first, there was a lot of resistance with the patriotism prompt, but I’m most moved by their courage to do it,” said Hall.

For many students, this is the first time they have ever had artwork on display in the community.

“I was surprised to see my artwork was selected,” said sophomore Jaryd Clark. “I usually keep to myself, but this process was definitely interesting and thought-provoking.”

Other students with more experience say Hall has inspired them to pursue their passion for art even beyond the classroom.

“I think it broadens my ideas,” said junior Chloe Levesque. “With this art class, I get to think outside the box.”

With graduation approaching in June, one senior said she’s thankful to be part of a new school tradition at the end of her time at WLC.

“I think it’s cool the community got to see some of our artwork,” said senior Brianna Fish. “All of our artwork complements each other.”

According to Hall, WLC plans to host more showcases in the future for students and community members to enjoy. In the meantime, community members can view the artwork on display at the Wilton Public Library for several more weeks.
